Prof. Charles Kolstad is Senior Fellow at Stanford University, appointed jointly in the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Doerr School of Sustainability (Precourt Institute for Energy), becoming emeritus in 2022. Prior to joining Stanford in 2012, Prof. Kolstad was a Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California (Santa Barbara) where he is also now emeritus. Prior to this he was a professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He has also been a visiting faculty member at MIT, the Norwegian School of Economics, Oxford University, UC Berkeley, KU Leuven and the New Economic School (Moscow).
He is a past president and Fellow of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE), a founding editor of the Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, and a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also a University Fellow at Resources for the Future and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Prof. Kolstad’s research focus has been on environmental and energy economics, particularly coal markets and environmental regulation. In recent years, most work has been on the economics of climate change. He has published widely on these topics in refereed journals and books. He has also authored a leading advanced textbook (Environmental Economics), which has been translated into multiple languages and is forthcoming in a third edition.
Prof. Kolstad’s interest in economics began when he taught secondary school in rural West Africa, under the auspices of the US Peace Corps.
