Research
"Our energy systems reflect our ambitions for progress and our values for how we get there. New technologies and policies, the result of research and development, enable that pursuit."
- George Shultz, 1920-2021
Funded Projects
Bits & Watts funds three types of research projects: Seed Grants, Flagship, and Member Collaboration projects. Each type has a distinct purpose, selection process, and funding limits for research projects focusing on four key areas: Resiliency and Decarbonization, Energy Transition and Justice, Electrification, and Digitalization.

Precourt Pioneering Projects
Precourt Pioneering Projects (PPP) bring together diverse centers and initiatives on campus to provide intellect in shaping research areas that remain undeveloped at Stanford. The topics targeted are ongoing challenges in energy and the environment and research proposals must consider the broader societal, policy, and business challenges of implementation and deployment of new energy technologies and greenhouse gas removal approaches. Bits & Watts collaborates with PPPs centered around AI for Energy and Climate.
